ASUU disagrees with SSANU, NASU over new OAU vice-chancellor

The Academic Staff Union of Universities at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Osun State, has disagreed with the Senior Staff Association of Universities and the Non Academic Staff Union over the appointment of new vice chancellor for the university.

The Governing Council of the OAU, led by Prof. Roland Ndoma-Egba, had on Monday night announced Prof. Ayobami Salami, who is the currently the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) as the 11th VC of the university.

With this announcement, Salami will succeed the outgoing VC, Prof. Bamitale Omole, whose tenure expires on June 23.

The announcement had triggered protests by SSANU and NASU members since Tuesday.

But the Chairman of ASUU, Dr. Caleb Aborisade, when contacted on Friday, said that his union was okay with the process through which the new VC was appointed.

He said the process of appointing vice-chancellors of varsities had changed with the 2009 agreement reached by Federal Government with the ASUU.

He noted that with the new guideline, the process started and ended at each university, adding that the visitor to any university had no hand in who is appointed as VC any longer.

Aborisade said the current VC’s appointed was done the same way the governing council appointed the new vice chancellor, adding that the process of selecting vice chancellors was the same in all federal universities.

He said, “ASUU approved the way the governing council carried out the short listing of the candidates. If the council did not follow the process, at least one of the candidates who applied for the job would have complained but none of them has complained to us. But SSANU and NASU are the ones complaining.

“ASUU believe the council has not done anything wrong. We are not in support of what SSANU and NASU are doing now. The council said the interview of the shortlisted candidates was shifted to Abuja because of the disturbance on the campus.”
