FRSC: Road accidents reduced by 15% between January and May

The Federal Road Safety Commission says road traffic accidents in Nigeria reduced by 15 per cent from January to date. Bulus Darwang, the Assistant Corps Marshal in charge of Kaduna, Kano, Katsina and Jigawa States, disclosed this to newsmen on Wednesday during a familiarisation visit to FRSC Unit Command under Zaria in Kaduna State. Darwang said:

“I can tell you that we have reduced road crashes significantly not only at the zonal level but in the country generally.

“From January to date, I can say without any fear of contradiction that the corps has been able to reduce roads traffic crashes by 15 per cent.”

Darwang said the visit was to appraise the challenges of the unit and fashion out strategies of addressing them. He said:

“In essence, I want to have an on-the-spot-assessment of the unit.

“I will try to look at their challenges so that I can do everything within my power to address some of them.

“I will ensure that they have more logistics and more personnel so that they can deliver the dividends of road safety to the motoring public in Zaria and its environs.”

The Zonal Commander cautioned motorists against over-loading, speeding and other forms of dangerous driving.

Darwang also advised motorists to always check their tyres to save lives and property.

He said: “I want to call on motorists to be mindful of the tyres they use because tyres are just like drugs, they have expiration dates.

“If a tyre expires, it is prone to tyre-burst and can lead to accident.

“Authoritatively, between January and April, we have had several cases of tyre related-road-traffic crashes.

“We will use this opportunity to educate members of motoring public on it.

“If they are buying a tyre, they should make sure they check the expiry dates.

“They will see DOM on the side of the tyre; meaning date of manufacture.

“So, you calculate four years after manufacturing date.

“No matter how new a tyre is, once it has spent four years, there is the tendency that it will burst.”
