Borno orders chairmen to relocate IDPs to communities

The Borno State government yesterday ordered council chairmen to relocate Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from camps to nine liberated communities along with their Divisional Police Officers (DPO) to ensure security and adequate food supply for returning displaced persons.

Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Usman Zannah, speaking at the Musa Usman Secretariat Complex, Maiduguri said IDPs protest on Thursday’s protests over poor feeding was caused by inadequate supply of food items from National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) in the last three or four months.

He stated: “Those council chairmen that are maintaining IDPs’ camps here in Maiduguri while your areas are inaccessible are to immediately relocate to camps in your council areas and listen to displaced persons’ problems.

“Where there are problems, you run down to us, so that government can render all assistance, including the supply and distribution of food items on family or household basis.”

Zannah, however, noted that in the last three or four months, the Ministry has spent over N20 million on the procurement of firewood by SEMA.

He said there were lots of allegations and counter-allegations that the cooks in camps do not cook enough food, despite the supply of firewood.

Consequently, he said government and other donor agencies decided to feed IDPs on the family or household basis, instead of central cooking in camps, a system he said has worked well.

Zannah also regretted that some of the displaced persons hide food items and sell them.
