World Literacy Day: BAN Targets Children In IDPs’ Camp

As the world commemorates World Literacy Day, a non governmental, humanitarian organization, Brothers Across Nigeria (BAN) has targeted vulnerable children whose education have been threatened due to no fault of their own at the internally displaced camp (IDP) in Kuchigoro, Abuja.

Incidentally, this year also marks 50thanniversary of International Literacy Day and UNESCO is celebrating it under the theme, “Reading the Past, Writing the Future.”

The humanitarian group, which has members across several tribes and religious divide, took education materials, bags, clothing and various food items to encourage the children in the camp.

In his speech, the president, Brothers Across Nigeria (Northern region), Dr Ugochukwu Nwabueze, said with the sub-theme adopted by the organization, “Every Child Deserves to be Literate,” it is their belief that every child irrespective of their status, family background or where they reside should have access to education as this is what can guarantee a bright and better hope for the future ahead of these children.

He said the organization which understands the plight of children, decided to target those displaced due to insurgency and other communal crises across the country.

Nwabueze said, “BAN has tried to do things differently away from the usual; we worked with the management of the IDP Camp, Life Builders Initiative (the NGO in-charge of the IDP Camp School) and the IDP School head teacher to identify gaps in the area of educational materials that are needed in the school.”

He encouraged other NGOs to emulate their gesture of kindness and offer assistance to people less privileged than they are especially people who have been internally displaced. The president, BAN Northern region added that government at all levels must give priority to these set of Nigerians because they deserve to be educated as this will in turn, avert the dangers caused by ignorance in the nation.

“On behalf of our members, I wish all Nigerian children a Happy World Literacy Day celebration. Do not be discouraged by your present situation, with education, the future is bright.”

However, chairman of one of the two FCT chapters of BAN, Olamide Tony Johnson, expressed concerns that well-meaning Nigerians are not doing enough to uplift the less privileged in the society.

“As a matter of fact, there are lots that people can do to reduce the suffering of the less privileged. I wish many Nigerians would try to go to IDPs camps and wherever we have less privileged people so that your heart will be awakened to know that wherever you find yourself, its just by the grace of God. You can be here tomorrow.”

Responding, the Head Teacher, Life Builder Initiative, Rebecca Zakaria Anzaku, commended BAN for the donation, saying that the children too are happy with the happiness visible on their faces.

She said the gesture would go a long way in the learning and enhancing the capacity of the children.
