The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has warned Nigerian migrants who intend to travel to Europe and other parts of the world en-route Libya to jettison such plans. Findings revealed that the federal government through the National
Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has from 2016 to date evacuated not fewer than 1,000 illegal migrant from Libya.

Speaking during a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, Abike Dabiri-Erewa simply said that ‘’no place like home,’’ adding that most countries around the world are currently facing myriads of
internal crisis. ’’Nigerian migrant who intend to travel to Europe and other parts of the world en-route Libya to jettison such plans now,’’ she said.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President lamented how thousands of Nigerians seek greener pastures, refuge and asylum each year, and some also migrate illegally, transiting through North Africa and then crossing the Mediterranean to Europe. She also warned that the issue of immigration is getting serious as many Nigerians have been dumped into the Mediterranean Sea. She stressed that although some Nigerians are not willing to return back to the country, but the government is ready to evacuate Nigerians who wish to return back to the country.

‘’To avoid crime and criminality we will continue to work with NEMA to evacuate Nigerians who are stranded across the world. Immigration is a problem that must be tackled,’’ she said.

The deputy director, Search and Rescue, NEMA, Dr. Bamidele Onimode in his speech said NEMA has evacuated not fewer than 1,000 illegal migrant from Libya from 2016 to date. Onimode described immigration as serious crime that can lead to death penalty. He added that most Nigerians evacuated from Libya in search for greener pastures are from Edo and Delta state, between the ages of 16 and 22 years.
